Escher's woodcuts

Tonight I was piddling around on Google Images, looking for illustrated depictions of snakes, and stopped in my tracks when I spotted the image above, Snakes by M.C. Escher. It's the first time I've ever seen this woodcut, and now I can't stop staring at it. I love his optical art, but clearly it's time to find a good book of his work, because these images are cutting through me like a knife.

If you're as entranced as I am, check out the picture gallery on the official M.C. Escher website.

His art is fascinating. I watched a documentary about him, which explained the way he integrated mathematics into his work, and it was extremely interesting. The one I saw was in Norwegian, but I'm sure you can find an equivalent online, it's highly recommended.

There's also a riveting Pulitzer-winning book called Gödel, Escher, Bach (big enough to kill a giant mammal though) that explores the link between art, music and math. Completely mind-boggling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach
